Stephen Colbert Replaces David Letterman as ?The Late Show? Host on CBS

Stephen Colbert is taking over as host of ‘The Late Show’ after David Letterman retires next year. CBS made the announcement that Comedy Central’s ‘The Colbert Report’ host makes a transition from cable to broadcast television and inherits the program created by the retiring TV icon. The retiring 66-year-old David Letterman made a surprise announcement of his retirement during the usual taping of his show at the Ed Sullivan Theater in New York City, and sparked rampant speculation as to who his replacement might be. But we need not speculation any longer. Variety broke the story that the 49-year-old Stephen Colbert is the successor. CBS released an official written statement from its chief executive, Leslie Moonves: “Stephen Colbert is one of the most inventive and respected forces on television. David Letterman?s legacy and accomplishments are an incredible source of pride for all of us here, and today?s announcement speaks to our commitment of upholding what he established for CBS in late night.” For his part, Letterman also released a statement, “Stephen has always been a real friend to me.
