Katy Perry: ?Unconditionally? Music Video, a Dramatic Costume Spectacle

Katy Perry’s “Unconditionally” had its official world premiere on MTV revealing a dazzling spectacle of period costume and symbolic imagery. The pop music superstar’s latest video had been long anticipated. “Unconditionally” is the second single from Katy Perry’s 4th studio album, “Prism” and it speaks of love. In interviews she has acknowledged the influence of her boyfriend, John Mayer. After a notable lyric video it now gets its full visual treatment. Katie Perry had long teased this video — as every artist does — by assuring us it was going to be something different. She told MTV recently that its imagery — “gorgeous, beautiful looks” to be exact — drew inspiration from two movies, ‘Dangerous Liaisons’ and ‘”Anna Karenina.” Directed by Brent Bonacorso it was shot in London. The influence is much apparent as Katy Perry and all those who surround her are attired in Edwardian style costumes with some occasional anachronistic elements. The music video for the ballad which itself is beautiful and gorgeous both in melody and in inspirational lyrics had the grand rollout on MTV, which these days is unusual as MTV is now notorious for not playing music videos.
